V26 Report

The 2026 Yarra Valley season delivered a vintage defined by patience and precision.

Following a relatively mild winter and a cool spring, the growing season progressed slowly. With the exception of a couple of heat spikes, conditions throughout January and February remained largely moderate by Yarra Valley standards, allowing for even ripening and flavour accumulation, and retention of natural acidity. While periodic rainfall events required vigilance in the vineyard, overall disease pressure remained manageable and fruit condition leading into harvest was very good.

Vintage at Santolin began in the second week of March, with the following ten days proving to be the most intense and demanding period of the season. This window saw the majority of our Pinot Noir and Chardonnay harvested, requiring long days and careful coordination between vineyard and winery to ensure fruit was picked at the optimal time.

The cooler conditions throughout the season contributed to excellent natural acidity and strong varietal definition, particularly in Chardonnay, where citrus drive and mineral structure are hallmarks of the vintage. Pinot Noir parcels show impressive purity, fine tannin profiles, and vibrant red fruit character, reflecting both the restraint and elegance typical of the Yarra Valley in cooler years.

One of the highlights of the vintage for us was bringing in Barbera fruit to make a single varietal Barbera for the first time. It’s a variety we’ve been excited about for a while and 2026 felt like the perfect season to work with it. The long, mild ripening conditions suited the fruit beautifully, allowing it to develop vibrant colour, bright acidity and plenty of freshness while still achieving great flavour ripeness. Barbera feels like a very natural addition to our line-up. It shares the bright acidity, savoury edge and easy drinkability we love across all our wines, while also being the kind of wine that feels right at the table . It pairs effortlessly with the food we love to share with family and friends.

Overall, 2026 stands as a high-quality Yarra Valley vintage - one that combines energy, detail, and site transparency. The wines are already showing strong personality and balance in the cellar, and we are excited by their potential as their maturation continues.
