Sangiovese is one of the most widely grown varieties across Italy with some of the most famous wines produced from the rolling hills of Tuscany. While the Yarra Valley may not get the warmth of the Tuscan sun, we do have the gentle sloping vineyards and ideal soil conditions to produce a savoury, Italian style Sangiovese.
We source our fruit from the Yarraland Vineyard in Chirnside Park, which has sweeping views across the lower Yarra Valley. Handpicking commenced on 13 April 2015 for our first ever Sangiovese. The fruit was then lightly crushed into open pot fermenters and left to ferment naturally with wild yeasts over two weeks. After maturing in seasoned French oak for ten months, the wine under went a single filtration before being bottled.
Aromas of spice and black currant abound with lifted red fruits. Medium bodied, the palate is savoury and structured with earthy tones finishing long and textural. This is a classic match with Italian food such as rabbit ragu with tagliatelle or slow cooked white bean and sausage casserole served with creamy polenta. And who can go past a wood fired prosciutto pizza with dressed rocket and a glass of Sangiovese?
Newly released our Santolin 2015 Sangiovese is ideal for the warmer months ahead, when a lighter style red wine is preferred. Saluti!
