“It’s strange how sometimes a wine doesn’t come across your radar. Then when it does you’re excited, dig a little deeper to discover they have a huge following of critics and a wall of medals and achievements, both locally and internationally.
Launching in 2012, husband and wife team Rebecca and Adrian Santolin impressed Halliday so much with their first two vintages they were promptly awarded a 5 star rating in Halliday’s annual Wine Companion. Quickly following, they picked up the Trophy for ‘Best New Act’ at the Young Gun Awards.
With their heads spinning, this Yarra Valley based couple continued to source grapes, start a family and gather golds along the way. They also received a listing at Qantas in the International Business Class (clearly I was at the wrong end of the plane).
So late to the party I am, but they piqued my interest when they were vying for top gold alongside Yarra Yering Chardonnay 2020 and Oakridge 864 2019 at the James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge last year. Top company they do keep, especially at these humble prices. They also received gold at the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards and Yarra Valley Wine Show, all within a week!
We’re the first to receive their newly released 2020 Gladysdale Chardonnay. Sourced from the Willowlake vineyard in Upper Yarra, this cool climate chardonnay is lavishly styled. Its buxom core of creamed honey, toasted hazelnuts and grapefruit pith are girdled by a fine driving line of acidity. Spicy French oak complements the fruit, adding depth while framing the fruit.
