96 Points from James Halliday - 2020 Chardonnay

The 2023 Halliday Wine Companion results have just been released and our 2020 Santolin ‘Gladysdale’ Chardonnay has been awarded a whopping 96 points.

From the Willowlake vineyard. Whole-bunched pressed and fermented in 300L French barrels (30% new). An impressive wine from the first, with its aromas of stone fruits, grilled nuts and discreet, well-judged struck match. There are white nectarines and grapefruit pith on the mouth-watering palate, and I like the touch of grip on the long finish, derived, most probably, from one barrel that was a whole-berry ferment. A lovely effort.

And we can’t forget this incredible write up from Gab Poy at the Prince Wine Store:
“Sourced from the Willowlake vineyard in Upper Yarra, this cool climate chardonnay is lavishly styled. Its buxom core of creamed honey, toasted hazelnuts and grapefruit pith are girdled by a fine driving line of acidity that injects vibrancy and life into the wine. Beautifully balanced, there’s richness yet tension, the wine walks a tight rope between exuberance and restraint. Spicy French oak complements the fruit, adding depth while framing the fruit. A delicious modern Aussie chardonnay.”
